Kleines Manifest, 2012-2013

A small piece of paper is mounted at eye level in the exhibition space. Characters are written with ink on it, but the writing is indecipherable. Postcards with the same motive lie on a table for visitors to take away. Starting points for this work were: (the refusal to write) an artist´s statement, considerations about the categorical differences between image and text as well as a childhood memory from the time before I learned writing and yet pretended to do so, producing the image of an illegible text.

Ein kleines Blatt Papier (11x17cm, Bütten) ist im Ausstellungsraum auf Augenhöhe befestigt. Darauf zu sehen sind mit Tinte und Feder geschriebene Zeichen, die aussehen wie Schrift, aber unlesbar sind. Postkarten mit einer Abbildung des Motivs liegen für Besucher zum Mitnehmen aus. Ausgangspunkte dieser Arbeit waren (die Verweigerung eines) Artist’s Statement, das Nachdenken über kategoriale Unterschiede zwischen Schrift und Bild als Medium sowie eine Kindheitserinnerung an die Zeit, bevor ich schreiben konnte aber dennoch so tat, als ob - und damit ein nicht entzifferbares Schrift-Bild produzierte.
